Mahecha had stage 3 cancer where his infraspinatus rotator cuff muscle and part of his scapula were removed. He decided to join American Top Team Wellington after seeing his brother training in Jiu-Jitsu. Mahecha has credited the martial art to helping make a rapid comeback from his cancer and now competes in martial arts and grappling.
